It wasn't often that Dieter was overcome with emotion, and really he wouldn't call himself particularly sentimental. But as his eyes scanned over Thalia's words again (Shut up. You are normal.) he knew he had to respond in person. Cavalier as he had been about the whole fiasco, he was hardly dealing with the truth of his little situation. It was better to act like he had it under control. So he walked out of his dorm and down to the common room, where he saw Thalia sitting by the fire. Creeping up behind the chair, he knelt down and hugged her as best he could from the angle she was sitting at. It was startling, being hugged when one was reading and one honestly did not expect to be hugged, so Thalia's initial reaction was for her entire body to tense up with rigidity that only subsided when she realized who was hugging her. She smiled to herself and clasped a hand firmly upon Dieter's forearms, forcing him to stay close and hug her for more than a brief moment. She knew Dieter was not the sort to become cuddly unless given a liquid courage which lowered his guard. She didn't dare ask him what this was for; she knew, whatever his reason, he needed it, and she was happy to supply it. Thalia felt the need to keep him close after that, so after she released him, and after he pulled away from the embrace, she pulled another chair closer beside her and patted the cushion there. "Stay with me," she said, still being commanding while speaking gently. Dieter smiled as he sat down, pulling the book out of her hands but being mindful of her page. It wasn't as though they hadn't seen each other, he wasn't sure they had anything new to talk about, but he was happy to sit with her and demand her attention nonetheless. He wasn't going to get sentimental in the common room when there were still a few people awake and wandering about. "Did you have a good day?" he asked as he leaned back and made himself comfortable in the chair. "Yes, perfectly acceptable," Thalia said cheerfully, leaning on the arm of her chair toward Dieter. "There was some second year that got lost when the stairs changed direction and I had to get him back to Charms class but other than that, there were very few bad happenstances. I saved a biscuit from dinner," she added, raising her eyebrows at him mischievously. Normally Thalia didn't take seconds of anything, not even desserts, but for some reason today she had. She withdrew it from her pocket, wrapped in a kerchief, a little crumbled around the edges but still wholly intact. She proffered it to Dieter and it was apparent she would not take no for an answer. "Quite the hero you are," he said, reaching out and taking the offer biscuit. "Though also quite the villain, sneaking out a biscuit." He broke it in half and handed part of it back to her, tossing his half back without a second thought. Not his favorite treat, but the birthday festivities had made him long for sugar more than anything. He wasn't exactly sure what topics of conversation were acceptable tonight, with Thalia. Sometimes she was a tricky book to read, so he just stayed silent. "You're trying to get me fat," Thalia accused with a dark mutter and an even darker look, though it bore noting that she took back her half of the biscuit and ate it, much more slowly than Dieter ate his. She brushed the rogue crumbs from her plentiful bosom and then sighed, staring at her book in Dieter's hands. "I hope you haven't lost my place. I'd be very cross if I had to reread a chapter or two." In truth, she wouldn't be very cross at all but it seemed something she would say normally so she said it. Sometimes Thalia did that. It seemed expected at times. She scooted her chair even closer to Dieter's and rested her head upon his shoulder. "I wouldn't dare try and make you fat, or lose your place," he said, reaching over to put a hand on her cheek briefly. Dieter almost wondered if people would get the wrong impression from their proximity -- he wouldn't mind if they did, really. Except Alphard. Still, he appreciated Thalia's presence more than anything. Sitting in his dorm and doing nothing for the entire evening hadn't seemed like the most entertaining of options, and he wasn't going to try again with Selwyn so soon. "You are a fantastic arm warmer." "I am fantastic at everything I do," she said with a sniff that suggested he better not forget it. The thought occurred to her as well that someone might get the wrong impression about them, but it was easily and swiftly dismissed as she knew two things: it would be better for Dieter if they did and she was Thalia Travers so she could do whatever the hell she pleased and nobody would say a word to her about it. |
