It was New Year’s Eve and Graeme McKinnon had a plan. It all began when he was bored at home over the holidays and was digging through things in the attic, looking for clues, forgotten treasures, anything to ease his boredom. Then he spied a box full of colourful fireworks. Fireworks! It’d be asking for trouble to light them then and there, or even at home at all, so they’d found their way into his trunk and into Hogwarts. It was the perfect night to set them off, especially with the party going on in the common room. He’d hidden them behind a chair in a dark corner earlier that day and as midnight drew nearer, he headed over there, though not without running into a familiar face first. “Hi, Trudy,” he said, smiling. “Having fun?” Back at Hogwarts for New Years, she wished she had sat down and thought out some great prank. But unfortunately the holidays has kept her busy and there was no real time to think something through proper. No time to make sure it was safe. Trudy would just have to have fun without some great display at Midnight. Who knows someone else might have something planned? Trudy was milling around chatting with a few of her housemates, attempting to be some social butterfly. But she turned to smile at the familiar voice. “Hi.” She said a little excited, especially since it wasn’t as if this was the first time they had seen each other since holidays. “I am, are you?” She smiled still. “I sort of wish it was all the houses together as I wouldn’t mind seeing family for New Years, but I have got you.” Trudy took a sip of the drink she had picked up before Graeme appeared. “Aye,” Graeme replied, though he knew he would likely be having more fun soon enough. He hadn’t considered having all the houses together, but now he would have agreed, if only for the fireworks display. It was a pity they wouldn’t be able to see it. “That’s true. It’d be nice to see the others. Aside from the Slytherins, of course.” After all, if they were around, he’d probably be too tempted to aim a rocket at one of them. “Well wouldn’t that defeat the purpose for me a bit?” She said with a raised eyebrow. Trudy shook her head and sighed, though at least Aloysius would be there if it was without the Slytherins. “But don’t blame you, when we get together with the Slytherins it never goes well, best example the bomb drills.” Trudy laughed a little. “You got any plans for midnight?” Both curious if he would be off trying to snag a midnight kiss, or had some other sort of plan at hand similar one she had wished she thought up. Graeme frowned a little; perhaps it would defeat the purpose a little, but it didn’t seem. “Things never seem to go well with them around,” he agreed. As for plans, well he wasn’t sure he wanted to reveal everything quite yet, so he just gave her a cheeky grin. “You’ll see!” Trudy looked at him suspiciously as Graeme told her she would see. “Will I really?” Trudy wasn’t sure what to expect. “Aren’t you being a little cheeky.” Though now her mind was running with different ideas of what Graeme had planned. “But now I am all curious and you know how dangerous that can be.” Trudy felt like she could figure it out before he actually did it, as if a personal challenge. Graeme couldn’t help laughing a little. “Nothing wrong with a little curiosity. But you’ll definitely see. It’ll be... hard to miss, I think.” But had he already said too much? “Don’t worry, you won’t have long to wait,” he assured her, glancing up at the clock. Obviously, whatever he had planned would be at midnight. Not hard to miss, so it was going to be a big thing. Trudy kind of liked the idea of this, even if she had no idea what it really was. A big display at midnight, it had to be good. Though she was itching to find out. “Are you on your way to get ready then?” As her eyes too darted over to the clock. It was getting close, and she didn’t want to keep him from whatever it was he had planned. “Do you need any help, or do you got it all figured?” Graeme tapped the side of his nose with his index finger. “Got it all figured. Be right back!” He made his way over to the chair, grabbed the fireworks and stuffed them under his cloak. One minute to go. He scanned the common room for the best place to set them off, made up his mind and scurried over to his chosen spot, trying to seem nonchalant. Then, finally when the clcok struck midnight, he lit them with his wand. Standing back, he watched the flashing lights and heard the booms with no small amount of self-satisfaction. The singed furniture nearby went ignored. Trudy could not pout too much, since, Graeme had probably had it all figured anyway. So she waited in anticipation, attempting to talk to someone else as Graeme scuttled off. Her eyes had followed him, until she realized it was rude to whomever she was talking too. She turned to look at them and then as the clock struck midnight she heard the sound of fireworks. She spun around wide eyed and even ducked a little. That little idiot! While brilliant, it was sort of well dangerous. Trudy looked over at Graeme with wide eyes, but a telling amused smile on her face. |
