Theo had always been somewhat of a loner in his own house but that alone didn't mean that he was usually as miserable as he had been lately. His housemates had been avoiding him because of the low mood he was always in, not helped by how poorly he'd been sleeping. He was expecting it to get better to handle the longer he was away from home but for the time being the tensions in the dorm room were becoming increasingly uncomfortable.
He'd taken himself away, feeling that as much as they needed a break from him, he also needed a break from them, and he'd snuck off (the Notice-Me-Not spell had assissted) away up the stairs to the astronomy tower for his special brand of pick-me-up.
He'd watched the sun start to slide low, wounding the sky as it went and leaving it bleeding reds and angry oranges, knowing that the bruising of purple and navy would follow after. It was the best time of day to watch the thestrals fly before they bedded down, like they thought they could follow the sun to it's nighttime home; Theo sat on the open windowsill, his legs hanging out, heels resting against the external brick of the tower as though he'd made grooves for them there. He watched his favourite magical creatures cast stark sugar-paper black sillhouettes against the sky's overexcited colours and shivered but seemed not to realise it as the temerature dropped with the sun, the breeze at that height cold, almost icy. The Slytherin boy's mind was still on the home he'd recently left, mired in the memories of his father no matter how hard he tried to turn his mind to the flying horses. He knew he didn't have very long before things started changing; school would end for him in no time and he'd have to come clean about where he stood (or rather, where he wasn't standing). He looked away from the animals and down between his feet at the drop below - he wasn't really considering it, not really. Even though it would be a hell of a lot easier.
