Well! It's a little combination of both, but if you wear down the chain enough, it will become dull and flat and then you will just have something dull and flat moving kinda fast which unless it's a really large something, and my chainsaw isn't that big, then not really?
So! The chain needs something to catch on, and if it is also sharp it cuts as it catches which makes it more effective and easier to work with. [....] Especially if those really big crabs come around again.
