There weren't many appearances to keep, thankfully. Having been married and widowed in relatively quick succession seemed to grant her some privilege, which is more than she could say about many of her contemporaries. The women she once gossiped with as a young woman were now married and expected to keep house and raise children. A truly boring life, indeed, one she was not sure she would have escaped herself had her husband lived.
The music swelled and began to die, signalling the end of the dance.
