She had little intention of surprising him, but Maria was very glad he didn't actually spit out his drink. The amount of washing her hair would need to cleanse the scent of liquor from it was...nearly unfathomable. As it were she would leave before things could get too rowdy. To her cloistered room and her prayers, most likely.
Maria's smile showed some teeth. They'd known each other long enough that she'd become comfortable around him in a way she didn't with other people. Her life had been upended early on and 'old friends' could be counted in very small numbers. "Yes, I am here." She responded, taking her seat and waving for him to join her.
Without saying anything, she knitted her fingers together and leaned her elbows against the table. He would speak first and, probably, whatever was rolling around in his mind.
