Altair was about two seconds away from Persuading the EKP woman to go away when Wil opened his mouth. Inwardly, he gave a great sigh. Excellent idea, Wil, he thought irritably. Invite her along so she can keep track of every law we break in real time.
Outwardly, however, he knew it was once again up to him to salvage the situation. So he put on his most charming smile and took a step forward. "Excellent suggestion, Wil," he said smoothly. To the knight he said, "Our good Wil is as strong and as thick as an ox. Carrying your friend will be no trouble for him." He slapped Wil on the back as he strode forward.
"And what he says, Madam, is quite true," he added in a slightly lower voice, looking the knight in the eyes. "There is no law against assembling in a public passageway, like these sewers. We're all terribly frightened of fireworks, you see, so the sewers seemed the preferable route, given that there are so many fireworks going on tonight."
The woman stared back at him with narrowed eyes, clearly unconvinced.
Oh, well, Altair thought. It couldn't be helped. He put on his most Persuasive voice and said, "Madam, we are all respected citizens of Emillion." Two of them were, anyway. "Your duty as an Emillion Knight of the Peace is to protect the good citizens of Emillion from danger, is it not? So you see, you are duty-bound to accompany us on our quest, and you will see that we have no intention of breaking any laws this evening." He put his hand over his heart so that even the most cynical member of the EKP couldn't doubt his sincerity.
And, if it happened that they must break a law or two, Altair could always Persuade her that she hadn't, technically, seen anything after all.
