Something about the concept of lunch with Aspel made him arrive early in order to be perfectly on time, waiting by the side of the road and idly checking his handheld, leaning against the low brick wall marking the boundary of the restaurant's outdoor seating area. The proposition of a casual lunch now cut a strange contrast with the knowledge of what was happening outside the city, but their plans remained unchanged, rising dead or no. Their meal dates were few and far between, after all, with Aspel swallowed up by her council duties and Rictor equally consumed by his tasks for the Silver Blades. They met like ships passing in the night, two armoured Cassuls delivering a salute before continuing on their way. This afternoon, however, they'd made a point of carving out some time for a proper meeting and sit-down meal. Enough had happened lately that Rictor felt it was required, somehow. That nostalgic anchor stretching all the way back, back, back to Kerwon was growing thin and frail; Seloria and Aspel were some of the last connections to remind him of home. Their parents were far-off, distant and hard to reach. His older sister was the closest replacement, as estranged as they were. So Ric waited, and he absorbed himself in following the aimless chatter on the network, joking about squires with Drake. (And speaking of squires... he ought to make Storm fetch some more supplies from the mercantile district—). |
