She had been sent to wash dishes. She did not have to do this often, fortunately - unlike some of her cohorts, she did not have a penchant for trouble - but it did happen on occasion when one instructor or another thought that the squire should be reminded of her humility.
She did try, but humility was a strange thing for her, who seemed to have alternately too much or too little of it.
She had been watching Theodore Finch since he had entered the kitchen, though, even as she finished the last of her task. Of course she knew who he was - quite aside from being a guild member of some standing, he was also a nobleman and unmarried, and she had to know all of those by name, even when they were nearly twice her age. She wondered what he was doing, and it took her a few moments of incredulity to realize he was... cooking?
How strange. Did noblemen cook? Was it considered an acceptable hobby? She had never met one who did, but then...
The pile of dishes she had been working on depleted, she made her way over to where he stood. She spared a glance to the knife and cutting board on the counter, cleared her throat until he noticed her. She was fairly easy to overlook. "Apologies," she said to his grunt of acknowledgement, her voice as deferential as she could make it. "Have you... finished with these, please? I was to wash every dirty dish in the kitchen before I could excuse myself and..." She stopped, feeling foolish. "But I would not wish to interrupt - I can wait until you have completed your... task," she added.
