Nate watched as Ari's song sent the toads and crabs into chaos, attacking each other instead of the Sentinel striding towards them. She hadn't been able to reach the dragon, but that was all right. Nate's slingshot was ready.
He pulled out a sedative grenade first. It probably wouldn't be strong enough alone, but he had three more, so hopefully that would slow the beast down. He used a fingernail to adjust the detonation time, eyeballing the distance to the dragon's head and adding time for a windup.
Nate half-heartedly wished for his hand-gun, with its excellent explosives, as he swung the sling to build up speed. Given the results last time he'd used it in combat, he'd probably been right to leave it behind, but still. He released one end, and watched the grenade fly.
It didn't hit, but got close enough to the great head that the dragon was caught in the edges of the cloud of sedative it released. The beast sneezed, and began to turn towards Nate, but by then he already had another grenade in the sling, and sent it flying. This one released right next to the dragon's ear, and it bellowed in annoyance. One more, and the giant head was even closer now, lunging forwards - Nate fumbled in his pouches, managing at last to get hold of the grenade, and flung it by hand. The dragon was so close now that the throw went better than he'd hope, the grenade releasing a cloud of purple smoke directly down its roaring throat.
Wait. Purple? But that was - oh Faram dammit all, did he just dose a sixty-foot dragon with hallucinogens?
Was it his imagination, or did the beast seem a little slower? In any case, it was still approaching, and Nate stumbled back as fast as he could, slinging his last few acid vials as he went.
