He and Aspel had made sure to get there early - not necessarily to talk, but to help get things set up. The meeting had been called with short notice, and neither of them wanted to make additional work for anyone else. Fortunately, the hall was big - big enough that it made Drake uncomfortable - and they were using the same space that the party had been held in mere weeks ago.
Upon arriving, he and Aspel had split up, each going about their own business and chatting a little in passing, but Drake couldn't remember any of it. He wasn't sure about Aspel, but his nerves were beginning to get the better of him, and he went about setting up chairs in neat rows while Aspel took care of making sure that the podium was correctly positioned and that the microphone was working properly.
When Merri had arrived, an hour early as promised, Drake had him finish up the chair arrangments while he went to check on refreshments. Something simple, of course - no need to have anything fancy - and set up towards the back. That way, as people entered early - and, he knew, they inevitably would - they would have something to do that wasn't hassle Drake, Aspel, and Merri. He figured that they had maybe twenty minutes - thirty at the most - before people started arriving.
Everything was set up and ready five minutes before the first group of people trickled in, and Drake grabbed Merri and headed for backstage, where the three of them waited and discussed speaking order until it was time for them to get on stage.
Aspel, they had agreed, would be the first to speak. Drake watched as she stepped to the podium, making sure to stand just a little behind her and to the right. Merri was to her left.
"Good evening citizens of Emillion." The smile on her face was welcoming, easy and her clothing had been meticulously picked for this event to be clean, crisp and well cut to fit her form.
"I wish to cordially welcome you to the meeting this eve. As many of you may be aware, I am one of your new council members, Aspel Cassul." A pause would be taken, allowing herself a second to breath and the room to settle in a bit. "Tonight, we wish to address what concerns we feel may be apparent after such atrocious crimes have occurred these past few weeks. At this time, we shall give an overview of the information we are able to share with the public, and after we are done, the floor shall be opened for questions." A moment would be given, waiting for murmurs to die down and her pleasant smile would remain.
"At this time, as was announced amidst the flurry of network activity Saturday morning, the Fighters Guild is working heavily with the EKP, Rangers, and well qualified other members of the community upon this investigation. The leads within our attrition are being aggressively pursued by all available members of our forces that have not volunteered to take on additional shifts of watch along the palings, inside the city walls, and to assist with guard duties. The strength of these teams has been considerably bolstered by the power gained through continued collaborative efforts with the Mages and Fighters guilds." A moment would be taken, a breath taken before Aspel began once again.
"Additionally, the council of the Fighters Guild, would like to extend gratitude to the Mages and Bards guilds respectively for their assistance in implementing our first live run of the alert system that assisted in ensuring a prompt and precise response to threat that occurred on Friday night from all guild forces that were available."
With that out, eyes would shift to Drake, seeming to given him warning before she began her next sentence.
"Councilman Liu, if you would be so kind as to take floor for explanation of the response system and knowledge of our current status within Emillion?" A gracious bowing of her head was given, a hand gesturing for Drake to take the lead on the discussion currently underway.
"Good evening," Drake said, careful to keep his voice smooth. He had some note cards in front of him in case he needed them. "Thank you all for coming tonight. I am the second recent appointment to the Fighters Guild Council, Drake Liu. As Councilwoman Cassul mentioned, there has been an concerted effort on behalf of the guilds to ensure that the tragedy that befell us at Docks does not happen again." He paused, briefly looking down at the index cards before returning his gaze to the crowd. "The emergency response system is still in development, but those of you who watched the network Friday evening may have noticed that each of the available Council members had immediately put forth an alert, warning both citizens and guild members alike of the danger and mobilizing their respective guilds into action.
The quick response was, in part, due to this. Of course, as I have said, it is still in the infancy stages of development, and we would welcome any and all help to improve and implement it on a more official and larger scale." Another pause, this time to breathe so he could calm his nerves. "Going forward, we would like to have a special alert for these sorts of things, something that informs you that the network communication is not just a regular post, but one of importance to you and your families. Additionally, we would welcome any commentary about how useful this current iteration is."
A brief glance at Aspel, to make sure he wasn't screwing things up before he continued. "We would also like to reiterate that any information regarding the culprits of this heinous act will be taken seriously and acted upon immediately. If you have something, please do not hesitate to speak with myself, Councilwoman Cassul, or any member of the EKP at any time. We are taking this threat seriously." Another pause. "At this time, the city has been declared free of the undead, so there is no need to worry on that account. We are working diligently with the Mages' Guild in order to ensure that the city remains this way. Again, any information that you may have in order to help us keep the city safe would be most welcome.
"We, as council members and citizens, will not stand for the level of disrespect that has been shown to Emillion, its citizens, and its revered dead. We want to assure you that whoever has done this will be caught and brought to justice." He paused to gauge the audiences' reaction before glancing at Merri. "And now, I would like to introduce Councilman Merrion Priddy, representative of the Mages' Guild."
Merrion stepped up behind the podium, notecards firmly in hand. "On behalf of the Mages Guild, I would like to thank Councilor Cassul and Councilor Liu for holding this open meeting and extend our sympathies to those who were affected by Friday night's attack. Our guild is honored to help the Fighters Guild protect the citizens of our city and we will continue to do to provide them our assistance as those responsible for Friday night's attack are brought to justice.
"We are also pleased with the outcome of the early version of the response system, and we will be working to refine it in the days to come so that it will be more effective and efficient to spread the word and lessen damages and loss of life. We welcome any suggestion you might have to improve upon what is currently in place and we will take everything said here into consideration.
"If you have any questions or concerns for the Mages Guild, please feel free to address it now or immediately following the meeting, otherwise, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or Councilor Peony Min or Tamar Makaria on the network." With that, he nodded to Aspel.
As all commentary from her companions on the stage began to die down, Aspel's voice piped in, once again. "As always, the Fighters Guild welcomes all assistance that wishes to be offered, as we will continue to serve, and protect, Emillion in any, and all, responsive measures we are capable of, within our current resources." The smile had died down some, while still available it seemed a bit more muted. "At this time, we will be opening the floor to questions for the remainder of our time. Councilman Liu, Councilman Priddy, and I will endeavor to best answer all inquires as we are capable of at this time."
