Quen perched herself on the edge of a crate. She hated to admit it, but as far as scenery went, one part of the city was much the same as any other. Granted, the bustle of the Bazaar District was more business-like than some of the others. On weekdays it was filled with people going about their usual business, making their day-to-day purchases and sales of eggs and bread; as well as the usual assortment of tourists, on vacation and in no hurry at all except to fill their eyes with as many experiences of the big city as possible in whatever short time they had allotted.
The Theater District always seemed to have some sort of performance going on, and often more than one. Buskers lined the streets doing everything from playing classical and modern music to performing skits to standing around with an exotic bird. There was always something interesting to listen to there, and often more than one thing at a time.
The Commoners District was a comparatively quieter part of town, filled with the sounds of children playing in the streets, people calling on one another at home or at work, and hovercars and bikes delivering goods and people to other parts of the city. There, when the wind was up, you could even hear the sounds of nature coming from the park.
Quen accepted her watermelon with a laugh and ate it leaning as far to one side as possible so that the juice would drip onto the cobblestones and not her clothing. There was no neat way to eat watermelon at the best of times, and that was especially true when said fruit had been pulled roughly in half by smashing it on the pavement and then prying it apart. The entire lower half of her face was covered with pink juice almost instantly, and it dribbled down her forearms. It was so good, though—Quen wasn't complaining.
She isolated the seeds in each mouthful and spat them as far as she could into the alley. She didn't want to hit anyone walking past, although every now and then she did aim in the general direction of Liyal. If he made a noise that sounded anything like "Hey!" she gave herself ten points.
