The Tower grounds were at their best in early summer, when the roses were beginning to unfurl their petals. She enjoyed solitary contemplation in the quiet shade, but she was happy for company too, when the company was of the right sort. She and Maria had slid effortlessly from acquaintance to friendship several years ago with few words spoken between them - it was very easy to be quiet with someone who shared many of one's own characteristics. She greeted Maria's arrival with her own smile and nod, and extended her hand for a brief squeeze if Maria were so inclined.
"I took the liberty of appropriating a bench for our use," she said, gesturing in the proper direction. It was under the shade of a tall tree, and she had set the tea tray there, a pot and two cups along with a small plate of lemon cookies. "I am glad to hear you say so. In truth," she said once she had settled in her seat, "I, too, required respite." She was teetering on the brink of illness, having cut her sleep severely to accommodate her new student, council duties, teaching, and her research for Siana, which endeavor continued to be largely fruitless. Her manuscript was close to three weeks late, but she barely had the time to think of it as it currently stood.
Picking up the teapot, she poured two cups, then lifted hers to her face, inhaling the scent of jasmine and allowing it to soothe her.
