"I suppose it makes you well suited to him," Carolina said, turning her fond smile on the girl. Divina had only confirmed what Carolina already suspected: that he was hurt because he'd put another's welfare before his own. "It was his employer, wasn't it? That noble boy." Stealing another glance at Li, she added, mostly to herself, "I do hope he's equal to Li's protection." It was none of her business, but she would hate to think Li was risking himself for someone unworthy.
She reached for where she'd set the bag of food and opened it. "I brought something for you to eat, if you want it," she said, pulling out one of the containers of noodles before replacing the bag on the table. "Li doesn't complain, of course, but I know he dislikes the food here." She waited for the girl's verbal assent, prepared to move to her bedside if necessary to help her sit up.
