It’d been pretty early when they headed out. After a week of clearing out monsters in the area, the villagers had agreed that it was okay for the kids to head down to the lake. The kids had been looking forward to it, because summer was almost over and they wanted to get in one last swim day before it got too cold. They could still swim in it, sure, but they could get sick, and spreading sickness had been heavily frowned upon since the attack of the winter plague. Some of the others had opted to stay in the village and rest or go out to try and make sure they cleared out everything. Eden had volunteered to go with the children down to the lake. While doing so, she had somehow managed to talk Ceres into joining them. Knowing Ceres, she wouldn’t just sit down and relax, but stand like a constantly irritated guard. Eden suggested she shed her armor. Eden had her weapons nearby, but she’d shed down to clothes, shedding her leathers, especially that close to the water. More importantly, that close to kids in water. There were some blankets placed on the bank under some trees, but most of the children were diving off the taller rocks and splashing each other as they swam by. Just has Eden had assumed, Ceres had taken up a guard position, and the look etched across her face couldn’t really be read as anything but irritated. There were far more important things they could be doing to assure the safety of both the town, and these children then standing around while the whole lot went off and played in the water. Sure, she could understand the value of giving the villagers and their children rest and relaxation time, but couldn’t someone else do that? “Please stop frowning. People are attempting to enjoy themselves, Ceres,” Eden said as she moved to stand right beneath the lady and look up. “Smiling, or at least a softer expression, should be considered part of your duty. Putting the citizens at ease, bringing trust to the rangers is beneficial. If there is something that needs to be done, they’ll feel more comfortable approaching you,” she said with a fervent nod. “Just saying. People won’t ask for help if they’re scared of you.” She shrugged her shoulders and looked back out toward the water where the kids were playing. They’d been giving Ceres’ post a wide berth. While she understood that was most likely what the woman was counting on, she still believed she had a point. “If their enjoyment is impacted by a guard’s frown, they have more serious issues then the look on my face.” And of course, the look remained without even a seconds worth of consideration given to Eden’s words or a muscle twitching on her face. In fact, almost as if to drive the point home, Ceres stance shifted so that she could also cross her arms. "No, they don't. You're literally the only person here who looks like they're being tortured," she said poking the taller blonde just above where her arms would cross. Eden was half tempted to send the woman into the water. Actually, she stored that idea for later. It was filed into the "heavily under consideration" pile for the day. She knew at the very least, it would give the kids a good laugh. Like the kid who was coming up behind them now. Eden smiled at him, but he simply reached out and tugged on the hem of Ceres' shirt to catch her attention. “A frown does not mean torture.” In fact if that was Eden’s idea of torture then really she had another thing or two in life coming. Sometimes, Ceres was ever the literal one in certain regards. The poking caused the frown to deepen some, because yes, it was entirely possible for her to look even more displeased. Though the sudden pull at her shirt caused her face to twist up with a cross between displeasure and confusion until she spotted the culprit and then Ceres attempted to put on a mask of indifference, which only partially worked. “Yes?” The boy looked a little intimidated, but he didn't let that stop him. It was easy to see him pulling his courage together as he held up a hand toward the armed woman. The hand had a bunch of hand picked daisies arranged in a haphazard bouquet. "These are for you!" Eden clapped her hands over her mouth attempting to hold in the cooing that came with such an adorable gesture. She hadn't seen her partner in this sort of situation and wondered how she'd react. Her bottom lip was held between her teeth as she continued to watch avidly! For a brief moment Ceres simply stared down at the boy, her eyebrows pulling together in a milder squint than normal, but the signature look was still there. However, after a beat she simply sighed and the squint fell away to something a bit more reserved to her fate. With that she reached out, carefully taking the flowers from the boy. “Thank you.” She didn't know why she felt like it was a victory when Ceres had accepted the flowers. Then again, Eden had tried to give her gifts before, only to be answered with annoyed glares, irritated grunts, and being told there was no need for such things. Then again, who could have said no to such a cute kid? "If only I had a memstone to record this moment," she said practically beaming. The kid spared her a glance before looking up to Ceres again. "You're welcome! And your gunblade is cool!" That exchange done, the kid ran off to rejoin his friends who all crowded around him once more before they wandered off back toward the lake. An annoyed glare was tossed back at Eden before Ceres shifted, a glance down at herself taken as she tried to figure out what to do with the blasted flowers. However, before she could think too long, the kid was talking again, which earned him a brief glance, and a slight nod. Then he was off like a shot, and Ceres sighed again, letting a look of annoyance fall over to Eden. Only once she was fairly certain the boy was out of ear range did she speak. “Did you put him up to this?” Eden wasn't phased by Ceres' disdain, but her brows did lift at the accusation. "If I had put him up to it, there would've been more lines and more flowers, and there would have been more than just him." She would've recruited all the kids to do something. There would be flower crowns, daisy chains, pretty rocks and the like. Eden had a habit of doing things big after all. The smile on her face showed that she was quite proud of the idea and her past orchestrations. If she could turn a frown into a straight line, it was enough! Initially, the over elaborate plan regarding what Eden would or wouldn’t do earned a narrowing of Ceres’ eyebrows and a glare. After a solid moment of turning that look upon the other woman, Ceres let out a sigh and waved one hand back towards the water. “You wanted to swim. Go on.” Or at least by how she’d stripped down, Ceres had assumed she had. After all, someone needed to stand guard in case something suddenly went awry. Ceres’ glare only made Eden smile wide and she adopted an look of youthful innocence. “For now,” she explained, when Ceres had mentioned her swimming. “But it’ll be your turn next,” she warned. Maybe she shouldn’t have warned her, but making it a challenge to get the other woman in the water was half the fun of trying. That declaration made, she ran straight for the kids. “RAAAAAAAAAWR!!” They scattered, giggling and screeching. |
