Emily stared at him. Her face had yet to show some emotion save for bewildered and she shook her head, "That's . . . what? How? Do you know who did it? Why would they—my father is—was an upstanding citizen of Emillion, why would anyone want to kill him?" The news was difficult to interpret. She could feel happy that her father was gone, but what on earth happened that led to his murder? It felt like she was being cut off from her revenge before she could even enact it.
The last she heard anything, Cormac had the files she'd paid to have acquired sent to an acquaintance to decipher them. That was it. But perhaps her own father's actions led to something else, or maybe he was an actual victim in this case.
Until the knight told her what was going on, she had to assume that his death was some tragedy. He was her father, and to the public, she loved him, even though he appeared hesitant to accept her engagement. She knew how he actually felt about it.
