She hadn’t been to a beach outing in Emillion in far too long. Despite having never been particular of the coastline, preferring thick forest to white sand, she had decided to give the festivities a quick run through before opting to return back to the barracks. Certainly there had been much to do. She had spent some time watching the cooks before moving on to walk along the sand. A ball had rolled past her feet, and without thinking she had picked it up between her hands. It was the voice that followed that caused her to roll her eyes. “You.” “Hello, Nessa!” He grinned, holding out his hands for her to toss the ball back to him. “You look ho -- uh, nice and warm.” Because she was fully clothed, and that was all he meant, but sometimes women… misunderstood. And it was a pretty toasty day; he’d gotten rid of shirt and shoes hours ago. Nessa hadn’t handed him the ball, instead she now rested it against her hip as she raised a brow. “What is that supposed to mean?” she inquired, a hint of annoyance in her voice. “It’s hot outside,” he quickly said by way of explanation. “You decided not to swim? The water feels good.” “I don’t like to swim,” she replied bluntly. “I just came to check it out. I’m probably going back to Shieldwyrm soon. There’s,” she looked around, “too many people here.” As soon as she noticed his attention away from the ball, she threw it with force at his chest. “See you later.” “Good arm,” was all he said (the impact against his chest barely registered). He didn’t even bother telling her it hadn’t actually been his ball. Suddenly, he was taken by a brilliant idea, “Hey, do you want to play? I was thinking of joining Drake and James anyway.” “Drake and James?” Her gaze went from him and towards the volleyball nets where she caught a glimpse of the councilor and the other ranger in the back. After a couple of seconds, she shrugged. “I’m not doing this for you as much as I am for the prospect of crushing Drake and James. You will have to enlighten me on the rules.” “We beat them, hopefully,” he said brightly, happy she had agreed. And she did have a good arm. And, he had cause to know, great aim. “That’s the rules. Well, there are a couple more…” “Of course there’s more rules. Why wouldn’t there be?” she followed beside him, as his voice washed over her thoughts. |
