As the city of Emillion continued to deal with its current strife, unrest, and questions left unanswered, daily life continued on. This included certain yearly festivals that the people of the city had long grown to expect, including the Festival of Lions. There were small signs this year that the city was not the same as it was; protesters against the Mages Guild positioned peacefully on certain streets, non-violent but signaling their discontent; buildings and shops that had seen their share of repair and reconstruction, those also that had been abandoned, merchants and other citizens who had chosen to take their chances traveling the unforgiving landscape of the outlands rather than remain; and even the Duchess of Limberry and her knights and entourage of foreign visitors, they too could be spotted at times within the usual throng, a peculiar sign of change if ever there was. For the day of the Festival of Lions, the length of the main street has been blocked off to normal traffic. Instead, rows of stalls, vendors, games and other entertainment travel across the largest vein of the city. Bards and dancers line the streets, offering performances for the lines of passersby. This festival commemorates an event so distant that whatever purpose it once served has perhaps lost much of its initial meaning, as dolls and merchandise with the figures of adorable lions can be bought and seen wherever one seems to travel. A civil war of an earlier age, a peasant rising up to become a king and bring an era of peace throughout the land, they are fantastic enough without the need for greater truths. The People's Hero runs throughout the day, a popular play during this holiday. Full of daring adventure, breathtaking romance, and even a hint of tragedy, the audiences never seems to wane, even as the sun begins to set. By evening, most citizens celebrating the holiday have gathered at the city square. This large open space has now been transformed into an outside dance hall, and couples of all variety can be seen dancing to the live show of music. There are many different rumors as to how this tradition began, the most popular of which is highlighted in The People's Hero--the story of the peasant king and his rescue and romance of a beautiful, kidnapped princess. An unlikely pair, of course, between a commoner and a noble, but that perhaps is where the popularity arose. After dusk, a display of fireworks goes off over the city, illuminating the celebration below in an awe-inspiring display of color. |
