“I wouldn’t have been good company,” he said with a shrug, shoving another forkful of salad into his mouth. Last year, he’d spent the morning with Zacheus, wandering around and not really doing much of anything before he’d met up with Ari and Aspel. Walking around would have been more of a reminder than he’d really wanted, and even though he knew that he was going to have to deal with it eventually, he could really only process one thing at a time. He wasn’t putting off dealing with Zacheus’ and Cressida’s deaths, he was just taking his time processing them. Slowly. “And aren’t festivals all about the fireworks, anyway?” Not that he’d intended to watch those either, except from maybe out his window. “Not just the fireworks,” Ari said, “but they certainly don’t hurt.” And they would be starting any moment now, so she leaned her head against Drake’s side and tried to find Aspel’s hand with hers. “I prefer to think they might be about enjoying the company.” Then, “Thank you for indulging us. I’m pretty sure we both think you’re good company… even when you're moping in the closet with a blanket over your head.” Fortunately, he was saved from having to answer by the explosion of the first colored lights overhead, and for a little while, there was silence. (And at one point, under the guise of finding herself another drink, Ari rose from her seat and subsequently stretched out on the blanket in front of them as though such had been her aim all along; she thought Drake might enjoy Aspel’s proximity for awhile, too, and having them nearby was, for that moment, enough to satisfy her.) |
