She was on her way to visit Kiernan as arranged, hopelessly punctual as always (she usually tended to beat her dragoon friend to public meetups when they had them), but as she turned the corner into his street, she stopped completely. Ofelia came to a halt right in the middle of the Commoners District, blinking at the well-kept building ahead of her, then turning back to the address on the crumpled slip of paper in her pocket, comparing it to another address lodged in her memory and in a file in the locked cabinet back home—and she laughed, sheer surprise bubbling up and spilling out of her. Her last few meetings with Kiernan had all happened in taverns or at parties or in her home, never at the new apartment since he’d moved in. (Part of her had always assumed that it would be temporary and he’d be flitting on to something else, especially by spring, only to be surprised that his address remained the same all the way until this bright and crisp afternoon.) She had some questions for him about the new place—yes, indeed, she did. But after looking at the ground-level entrance, then shaking off the strange, discombobulated disorientation that had settled on her like a heavy shroud, Ofelia let herself in through the gate and went to the back, the small side staircase leading to the upstairs rooms. Shifting the basket in her arms to free up a hand, she knocked at the back door. |
