What had seemed like an entertaining way to spend the day (free food, Ari, some of his friends in attendance, and Audrey hadn’t killed him or Sky yet) took a nose-dive after the conversation with Juliette. He had been aware of noble customs, that nobles married other nobles almost exclusively, but what got to him was how Juliette seemed to be okay with it. That she could so easily accept such a reality and get mad at him for disputing it had put him in a terrible mood, and not even the free cupcakes had done anything to remedy that. He was hovering around the ballroom (not sulking) being largely ignored by most of the other guests unless he happened to be in their way. If anything could cheer him up, it would be running into Sky (he had been whisked off somewhere by a guildmate earlier, and Pyr hadn’t wanted to argue with said guildmate―in his experience, every single member of Sky’s guild was batshit insane. It was this somber mood he found himself in when he spotted his newest friend nearby, and waved at her. It wasn’t like they could start a pillow fort in the middle of the ballroom―no matter how much it may have cheered Pyr up―but maybe talking to her would help. “Hi, Esther,” he said, approaching her. “You look pretty.” Esther beamed at Pyr and returned his wave with enthusiasm; glittering lights, music and food — this was in a way what entailed a good deal of noble interactions and while not bothered by interacting with commoners, she was surprised to see more than a few here. Not surprised in a bad way, of course. Classes were classes, but there was no reason not to befriend others and she didn’t see any reason to treat those of not noble birth as if they were aliens. “Thank you, you look handsome.” She touched his shoulder, giving it a small squeeze. “Wasn’t expecting you to be around here, Pyr.” Then again, she didn’t know much about the twins besides basics and their shared love of pillow forts. He grinned at the compliment and gave her a tiny shrug. “I didn’t really think I’d be here, but Sky and I got invitations to come. I guess because we’re friends with Juliette.” He could not help the shadow of a frown, as he remembered the argument, but pushed it out of his mind. “Are you having fun?” “Oh, I’m friends with her too, isn’t she lovely?” Again Esther found herself smiling widely, so much that it was hard to believe it was genuine (it was though). “I am enjoying myself very much, yes and you?” It was not polite to ask if they went to these type of gatherings often, so Esther skipped that question. “Did you try all the food? I stuck to the vegetarian things myself, but seafood and meat are surely delicious too.” Pyr nodded. “Yeah, everything’s really good. I haven’t tried all of it yet, but I’m on it.” He almost asked Esther if she kept a vegetarian diet, or if it was a one-time thing (he had been shocked to learn, not long ago, that she didn’t like chocolate), but then he thought she might take offense. The last thing he needed was another argument with another friend. So instead, he asked, “Have you had dessert yet? There’s some really good strawberry cupcakes you should try. I think you’d like them.” Esther had a weird diet, not out of vanity but out of having a weird nervous disposition towards food. Sometimes she would eat meat, but she preferred not to and sweets she restrained on because she lacked a sweet tooth. Chocolate she wouldn’t ouch and mushrooms were too chewy for her taste. Oh and she was allergic to oatmeal. “No, and I think we should rectify this.” She held out her hand for him to take, palm up. “Come on, strawberries are something I do love.” Grinning, he took her offered hand. “Then: strawberries, here we go!” And so they did, skipping along toward the food tables, as though they did not have a care in the world. |
