"She does?" he asked hopefully, trying to keep his voice to a whisper so that the man behind them would not shush them again. The song was nearing its end with barely a note of hope, and Merri bit his lip. "I hope so."
But Merri didn't understand how -- everything was so complicated by this point of the story, and he couldn't fathom how it would untangle itself. Would everything go back to how it was before? But how it was before wasn't ideal, and though Merri knew that he could not condone infidelity -- should not -- it was easy to see that those married to each other were unhappy, and surely there had to be an out for everyone to be happy!
Merri glanced over at the woman beside him. "You've... seen this before?"
