It was almost too hard to shake his embarrassment and his disappointment, but it was almost like a promise to be kept to Britta by this point; she would want to know if the musical was good, what he thought of it, the story and music and everything, and Merri wasn't sure if he could live letting her down. So it was with a heavy heart that he wound up at the Orpheum anyway, hoping that maybe, in the end, some music would be enough to lift his spirits.
Though what had happened at the restaurant lingered at the back of his head, the musical was delightful enough that he didn't dwell. Though the conflict was very prominent it was surrounded by good comedy, hopeful endings, and great music, all the way up until the second act where everything seemed to fall apart in all the worst ways.
Merri had gone to enough plays to know that the story always reached its darkest point before everything resolved happily, but sometimes, like now, the situation seemed too bleak. The song that Desirae now sang broke his heart into pieces, and he bit his lip and held his hand over his mouth to try to keep himself together. If he'd known that things would end up like this, where his own emotions were very raw to have to deal with the situation in the story, he might have gone home instead, and he even contemplated going home at the first opportunity he could escape from his seat. But he never left a show in the middle before, and he knew it was very rude to do so unless there was an emergency, so he knew that he just had to endure and hope for a happy ending.
