"I believe I was only a little taller than you at your age," she said. "Girls tend to grow sooner, but I believe you have the opportunity to outpace me in a few years." She hoped she would still be here when that happened, that someday she could look up at the man instead of down at the boy. It was one of her fondest wishes.
"And I do believe a cake of that nature could be arranged, as it will be a special occasion." She thought he might truly want something else by his expression, but be too shy to ask for it. She only hoped that the idea she had come up with would pass muster -- it was not something she could wrap and leave them to discover on their own, so it would be preferable if they didn't just indulge her.
"I do not think we will find chocolate lava cake today, however," she said with an amused smile. It was too dark for this holiday. "Still, I am certain we can find another dessert which will suit your taste. Let us see what is being sold over there."
Walking close together, almost as if the discomfort between them was at last beginning to fade, they moved toward the next grouping of stalls, both in good moods (if not, perhaps, for the exact same reasons).
