The squawks of scared chocobos and shrieks could be heard by the guards at the city Palings long before they were seen. Looks of worry and deep-seated concern began to embed into each soldier who stood watch, attempting to see in grey, hazy distance what might be causing the sounds. Would it be another attack against the palings? Another horde of monsters to slink from an icy blizzard? At least - as sad as it was to say - it wasn’t a scream from inside the city, that always seemed to end up much worse in the end. However, with each new threat, with every fight and scare, the guards’ and soldiers’ morale wore down a little more, as it was beginning to seem like there was no sense to this, no end, or even a real respite in sight. This would be no exception. Murmurs of speech had begun between the guards, a nervous glance cast out here and there at the noises in the distance, just far enough outside their line of sight for no real clue to be able to be found by nervous looks and hushed words. That was, of course, until a flaming carriage chased by a floating embodiment of fire itself sped head-on into the Palings protecting the city itself. The wood would splinter, the carriage shattering apart upon impact, and the fire elemental hovered but for a moment, seeming to take in the damage it had done, the victory it had won before beginning to float away, as if the gaping guards didn’t exist at all, and float leisurely back to the metallic groans and bat like shrieks that now were emerging from a location closer than before, but still out of the guards’ line of sight. If anyone dared to venture far enough out to encounter the noises, they’d quickly find the monsters seemed terribly invested in stopping anyone - or anything - that seemed to be headed down the road towards Emillion. |
