Rosemary & Thyme had a small storefront, painted a cheery yellow and with a wooden sign announcing its name, situated between a bakery and a greengrocer. The scent wafted out the moment the door was opened -- hundreds of spices, from sweet to hot to savory, blending together. The opening of the door was inevitably greeted with sudden excited barking from the very small dog which refused to stay in her bed behind the counter and continuously attempted to trip up any customer not watching his or her feet.
The shelves lining the long, narrow interior of the shop were neatly organized, and over the course of the week, various teenagers (with varying expressions from comfort to mild panic) could be found minding the register. Periodically, an oddly dressed man could be seen lurking, as if concerned that they might shortchange a customer (though his thoughts on the workers were only voiced behind the closed door leading to the area in the back of the shop).
The stockroom, in contrast to the gleaming front of the shop, was filled with bottles and bags and jars jumbled together in disarray, many without labels. That the owner had departed and hired someone else to take care of inventory was perhaps telling -- no doubt the thought of organizing such a disaster was enough to send anyone on holiday to another continent.
And as for the crew of young men and women tasked with keeping the enterprise running through the week... well, only time would tell if they would be successful in this venture.
