Darius/Cormac - Complete!
“Heh” The low noise was followed by a brief head shake. It was an odd miracle of its own, but it didn’t mean that other people hadn’t died. It was unfortunate they hadn’t been better prepared, or able to respond. They’d done all they could, everyone knew that but… Darius couldn’t help but blame himself on some level for not doing better, doing more… Even at this juncture, weeks after everything had long faded and the city had done its best to settle back into old ways.
Swallowing, his adam’s apple bobbed for a moment with a nod of Darius’ head. “Yeah it was.” He’d never seen anything completely like it, and honestly hoped he never would again. His self-esteem couldn’t take it, that was for fucking sure. “With you on that one. If I never seen it again, that’ll still be too soon.” And really, what else was there to say?
Cormac wasn’t completely blind to his friend’s discomfort, but decided not to pursue it, because that’s not what they did...unless invited, then Cormac came down as blunt as a sledgehammer. For now, he decided to wade back in shallower waters. “I saw you brought your mother. She appeared to be having a lot of fun.” Or perhaps not as shallow as he added, “Have you introduced her to this girl you’re dating yet?” They were totally dating.
“Yeah, you know how she gets.” Cormac had heard more than enough stories, Darius was certain. Now, if those stories were from him, or not, that would be a whole different tale to tell. Though the second question caught him off guard. “Uh,” What the hell was he supposed to say to that. “Well, no.” A beat. “But I’m not sure I’m even involved with that girl anymore.” His shoulders would shrug in the suit jacket. “Sorta got into a fight.” Which, well, that was a different mess too.
“You’ll get over it,” Cormac said with a shrug. Darius was one of those genuinely nice guys, so he was sure she’d get over it too. “She just needs some time to cool off and everything’ll be fine.” He didn’t really argue with Emily. Not really. They just had really calm discussions about things and while they worried, they pretty much stayed out of each other’s way. It was a very strange relationship, not that he didn’t get passionate about certain topics. Cormac didn’t bother to ask who it was. It was the first person Darius had ever expressed this much interest in, and he was sure he didn’t want Cormac fucking that up for him.
“Yeah, I guess.” Darius attempted to shrug the comment off, not really wanting to think about it all that much. “You and Emily doin’ alright?” It seemed - of course to him - the most natural progression of conversation they could have. That was of course, assuming his ma didn’t get into something he had to go rescue her from. How she was so feisty after all these years, he still didn’t have a clue.
“As well as can be expected with the not being dead coupled with the class thing,” Cormac said with a shrug. “Not that she cares. She’ll figure something out,” he said with a smile. It was an unconscious expression, but Emily always figured something out. “Ah and it looks like she’s waving me over to talk to some people I don’t give a fuck about. Watch me restrain myself from breaking this glass on something and stabbing out my own eyes and ears.” All this was said while still smiling, though now it was a mockery of the smile he had only moments ago.
He clapped a hand on his friend’s shoulder. “I will see you around.”
"Yeah, see you around, man." And with that, they'd part ways for the night.
