His Ma always got so excited about events like this, in fact, when given a chance to see the king, he’d thought the woman was damn near going to break his arm off with the grip she’d taken. Though, the look on her face when Darius had agreed to take her could have lit up a room, there was no question in his mind about that. In the end, he’d taken her dress shopping, it was a nice way to get her out of the shop, and into something pretty and new that she’d like, could be proud of her boy for buying her, and he’d really needed a new suit anyway. The one he’d been wearing to these events wasn’t exactly something you’d wear in front of the king if you could help it. Sure it looked good enough, but it didn’t fit all that well considering. Now though, his mother had wandered after someone or another she recognized, saying something about how Miss something-or-other had been talking to her about the newest gossip and she had to be caught up on the rumors before all the good ones slipped away. Secretly, Darius suspected she was actually going to talk shop, but, well, he couldn’t stop her, and the white mage wasn’t about to try. Darius didn’t need to be taken out of the world by the woman who put him in it tonight, or any night really. Snatching up a couple of the snack foods that roamed by, and wandering off, it wasn’t long until the man found himself in the garden. Man, this place was pretty. Finally free of the rather awkward conversation she had fallen into with Ridley’s sister, Juliette had at last found a garden path with only a few wanderers and set down upon it. She could hear the sound of revelry as though from a very great distance, but otherwise, everything was still and quiet. Finally she began to relax. Saffron was not, however, destined to be her only odd encounter of the evening; as she turned a corner, admiring ice molded into a phoenix rising from frozen flame, she beheld another familiar figure. This one, she could not possibly mistake for someone else -- but that did not lessen her sudden acute discomfort. She knew little of Alys’ friendships, particularly with gentlemen, but Juliette was not a stupid girl -- Darius Delacreaux had been a visitor of sme frequency, popping up on occasion in her sister’s stories; now, it was as though he had vanished entirely from Alys’ life. Still, there was no cause to be rude. As she approached him down the path, she offered him a nod and a small, hesitant smile in greeting. “Good evening.” “Oh hey, good evening.” A smile was offered to the girl, and a nod of his head. “How’re you?” While he didn’t really know her very well, and remembered the morning he’d spent trying to calm the girl while Audrey was nearly dying on them both, it wasn’t any reason to be bothered or rude in the least. Though, maybe it would be easier if he was. The thought was shrugged off. There was no point in drudging up issues in the past, and it wasn’t like this kid had anything to do with the fight they’d gotten into. Thinking about it… When was the last time they had talked? Honestly, aside from the network message he’d sent out earlier, he couldn’t actually remember. Between attempting to heal, and tearing around the city trying to tend to the wounded, followed by the new year and…. Huh. It’d been a while, hadn’t it? He’d been angry about it at one point, but even that had faded by now. |
