It wasn't hard to dig up compliments he'd heard adults use a thousand times; and she was pretty, in fact, so he wasn't lying. The day Lan couldn’t tell from one twin to another, or that her sources were so bad she couldn’t tell exactly who was attending the same event she was, Lan would officially leave business. It wasn’t the case though. “Why, thank you, I really like this dress. You are quite dashing yourself. So let me tell you what we will do. You are to grab this tray, fill it up with all sorts of delicious things and offer them to whoever comes close, who should be everyone. Offer them a snack and smile, it shouldn’t take long at all to empty it. With that done you’re free to scavenge as much as you want.” It would be at least enough time to give the people she was more interested in impressing to taste some of the delicacies, and she knew that Pyr wasn’t going to decimate the food anyway. “Only one tray, and then you’re free to do as you wish. Do we have a deal?” Pyr rolled his eyes. “Uh, I don’t know. I mean I paid to be here. Or, well, my sister did. Anyway,” he waved his hand as if to bat away an annoying fly, “if you’re short-staffed, why do I have to go around with a tray? And it’s not like I’d be a great waiter, you know.” A shrug. “I still haven’t hit my growth spurt, so probably I’ll be hard to spot in the crowd and people won’t take the food on my tray anyway.” Lan sighed softly, making her best effort to not roll her eyes in response.“What are you talking about, you’re a kid; people will pay you even more attention than the staff as long as you stand in front of the tables. Isn’t the liberty to have as many servings as you wish payment enough? It’ll take you but a few minutes, I guarantee it.” Youths these days, they were all about the prize, never about the chase. “It matters little to me in the end, but I can’t let you hoard food if you don’t follow the rules. Better decide now.” In the end, it wasn’t much of a decision. The thought of endless food was a tantalising one, but he was already made to work his butt off at training; this evening, at least, he wanted to be as much of a lazy bum as he could. And really, being told he couldn’t eat everything on the table was just par for the course, considering the way things were going lately. “Whatever.” He shrugged. “Even I couldn’t eat all the food here anyway. I’m out.” He gave her a small wave as he walked away. Best steer clear of Sky’s crazy guildmates, he decided. He’d just have to ask his parents to get extra food on their plates the next time they swung by the food tables, he supposed. |
