Just after the conclusion of the first act, Fumiya excused himself from the table and traveled backstage. The Sasakis had contributed a fair portion of funds for the event, and he’d been responsible for making sure the investment would be a worthy one. In the weeks previous he’d stop by a practice every now and then or have a meeting with the organizers, but tonight he was simply enjoying the culmination of everyone’s efforts.
Walking through the bustling throngs of performers, he spotted the one who had done the aerial silk piece. “Aisling,” he called out to her, and once he had her attention he said, “your performance was wonderful.”
“Thanks,” she said stiffly. She had very little contact with Fumiya Sasaki out of practicality; until Tynan died and Cian took over, she had been the heir to the Black Dragons rival. Heirs had a tendency to disappear when it suited, and Tynan had done his best to make sure that Ash wasn’t going anywhere. Too bad her father hadn’t actually prepared her for leadership.
“I hope you’re enjoying the show.” She had to play nice—he was a donor, and there were still airs to put on. Even if his smug face made her want to punch his nose.
His smile might have grown a notch at her bristling tone, but he had been too far away to tell. Walking over, he replied, “I am, thank you. If I had known I was going to run into you, I would have handed you the flowers personally but.” He shrugged mildly. “I hope you’ll enjoy them nevertheless once they’re delivered. Are there any other performances I’ll be seeing you in later?”
“Unfortunately, work has kept me busy. This was the only thing I could squeeze in this year.” Which was more than previous years, but Sasaki didn’t need to know that. Probably didn’t even care. “I’m surprised you’re just an audience member, though.” As much as she didn’t like the guy, she couldn’t deny he was a decent musician. He could have played accompaniment to someone or something. But, ultimately, none of her business.
“I really shouldn’t keep you,” she continued. “Thank you for the flowers. They’re lovely.” And would go straight in the trash.
“Is that so, perhaps we’ll perform together in the near future.” Fumiya wasn’t here to talk to Aisling though, and he offered a slight wave. “You’re very welcome,” he said before continuing on past her.
