Peony had been finding a variety of ways to keep busy recently, reasoning that her disquiet — and the nervous energy it generated — could be best put to constructive use, considering she could do nothing to control its source. She had thus taken to working longer hours, supplementing her Council duties with occasional teaching, and spending evenings at the Hellebore Street orphanage, where the upcoming holiday was creating more work than the employees alone could handle. The children's company was just what she needed, it seemed, to keep her mind occupied — and her schedule served as the perfect reason to remain out of her family's way. |
