He nodded slowly, remembering the person he had worked with before Peony had been appointed, and remembering the people who had been on the Council before he even thought that he might want to apply for the position when one of them had retired. He didn't think ill about any of them (though to be fair, Merri did not think ill of anyone); in fact, he only hoped to live up to their legacies -- something Peony was far more talented at doing.
Then he wondered -- and he flinched when he realized how rude it was to think it -- how old Lavitz was, but he shook himself out of it and smiled. "They were great people," he said sincerely. "I just hope I can do half a good a job as they did!"
