Merri blearily opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling for a moment, dazed. He wasn’t in his room – no, the designs indicated that he must be in the Cathedral. When did he get here? How? It was only when he heard a cry of relief and joy from his bedside did it all finally fall into place. “Merri, my baby!” And Tegan Priddy planted a wet kiss on his forehead. “You’re awake!” “Mother?” Merri was, in a word, confused. “Wha-- what are you doing here?” “I received your message and I came to the city as quickly as I could,” she explained, still holding Merri’s cheeks with both hands. “I was so scared that I was going to lose you, like I lost your…” She shook her head tearfully. “Oh, darling, if I’d known that this was going to happen, I’d have never let you come here! And with all those attacks… oh, you should have come home like I’d asked!” “I couldn’t leave, Mother. I can’t leave. I…” He took a glance around the room, surprised to see that many of the other victims of the mysterious disease were doing a lot better. “What happened?” “What happened is that you almost died, Merri!” his mother exclaimed. “It isn’t safe here. The disease that came here… well, it certainly hadn’t hit Risca, and if it had, you still would’ve been safe, and, oh, Merri! Please, come home, where you belong!” “I… I can’t. I’m…” He bit his lip. To say that he was needed here felt too self-important to say. Peony and Toku would do fine without him. Merri had full faith that his absence had barely been felt on the Council. “My friends are here. My life… Emillion is my home now, Mother.” “Oh, Merri…” Merri smiled. “This is where all the best medicine is, Mother. Not in the Outlands, but here. This is the best place for me. If I’d been hit with this in the Outlands—” He shuddered, thinking of Grenoble and Cammon. “—I might have truly died. Did they find a cure? Is that how we’re all… better?” “I—they said it’d take a few days to make the cure from the herb they found, but,” his mother bit her lip. “That isn’t how you’re better. It was the light of Faram, it had to have been. There was a bright light, and then… your fever was broken. I think there was a girl here, too, but I couldn’t be sure, I was so…” She shook her head. “But it doesn’t matter. By Faram’s will, He has answered my prayers, and He has not taken you from me. I couldn’t bear it. You’re alive, and you’re awake, and you will live.” Merri wasn’t sure if he understood completely what she was saying, but he knew that if anyone would have the answers, it would be the Council. But for now, it was good enough to be well again, and to have his mother near. “Yes, I will.” |
