The sun set early this time of year, and hiking up a mountain, through forested areas and rocky caves, seemed an unwise venture in the dark. Accordingly, a likely clearing had been found by the group leaders and the packs carried by the volunteers were finally set down. Campfires sprang up, food and bedrolls were passed out, and the scent of woodsmoke warmed the chilly mountain night. As for the volunteers themselves, mixed crew as they were, each prepared for tomorrow’s task in his or her own way. Some chose to keep vigil alone, but there was also conversation and even the occasional and unexpected strains of music. They were not an army, cobbled together as they had been at the last minute, but together, they were the best chance those lying ill in the city had. And so, in the morning, they would risk their lives. |
