It was not shaping up to be a good day, honestly. Lan wasn’t exactly sure of why at first, but by the end of it she would probably wish she had taken the signs a bit more seriously.
Thorough the day, Lan had been having a bad feeling alright, not only figurative, but certainly physical at moments. It wasn’t anything concise though, and that bothered her a good deal more than it would most people. She didn’t like not knowing things, after all. The funny feeling on her skin, the sudden rushes of warmth and the lack of breath she was finding herself in the middle of completely mundane situations were, in her opinion, symptoms that had arrived way, way too early in her life, and she wasn’t just going to accept that.
Halfway through the day she had already made the necessary appointments to have herself checked completely in the morning, and put some of her engagements on hold for the day. A side effect of being fastidiously efficient meant she usually had more free time than someone as involved with work as her would be expected to have.
Still, no amount of rest and relaxation made her feel better. She even broke a personal rule and doubled her napping time, only to wake up feeling marginally worse. Perhaps what bothered Lan was that, externally, she looked just fine, but the world was somewhat started to get tinted into an overall feeling of uneasiness. The fact she had actually seen others in several states of – and here her brain took a turn for the odd and started to use the word decay – poor health walking around.
So there was something in the air, or water, or somewhere; Lan would need to look into that. Well, more like instruct someone else to look into that, because she didn’t want to get anywhere near anything that had to do with people (but specially herself) feeling like crap. It was a most unfortunate timing, too, as she was supposed to put Loch’s knives to use sometime soon. She could always wait for things to calm down, but the middle of what looked like a massive case of flu was a pretty good time to go and get some things she had been looking for a while.
It was now going to have to wait.
She almost sneezed later that day, soon after the sunset, when the air cooled and a soft wind picked up. Lan had never been overly zealous about medications, but due to her night job she had always made sure to be on top notch shape, and nothing other than top notch shape; she didn’t get sick, period, but when she did it wasn’t like this; she would’ve known for at least a day before.
Seeing how she was only going to get worse before she could be better, Lan decided to make her little recon patrol shorter that evening. Sneaking around that quiet night on Emillion was not problem at all, considering that a number of people were apparently going to be early now. She also didn’t have any particular job pressing her schedule, so she was happy to make a few rounds through the city’s skyline.
Jumping from building to building had never been a real challenge to her; ever since she was a little urchin stealing food, the walls and the ledges had been familiar territory, so great was her surprise as she jumped over to a building slightly far from her, only to feel a sudden pang on the side, causing her to twitch, bend over herself…and not reach the building. Or she did reach it, but it was a wall she hit with her back rather than her feet landing over the roof. Falling was another part of climbing, and Lan was no stranger to this either, although she was a lot less fond of the experience.
The mere seconds that took her to fall from the roof were used to expertly push herself from the wall and towards the opposite one, where Lan had been windows. It was a wall jump while falling, which basically required every inch of strength in her legs and the promise of cramps later that night, but at least that would tell her she was still alive. This time she did manage to get a hold of a window’s border, but once again the odd pang made her cringe, fingers slipping and sending Lan on a free fall all the way to a pile of trash.
It was only a minute later that Lan decided her dignity was shattered enough to allow a pained grunt to escape her lips. And then another, and a final one as she rolled away from the filth and unto the ground proper. “Okay, “ she mouthed, breathless. “No more jumping around for today.” Which meant she was going to need to walk all the way to the Lounge, which meant she was going to use one of the back entries as to keep the patrons for noticing.
Yes, it did not shape up to be a good day. At all.
"This...is going to leave a mark."
