Fingers combed through her hair absently as she sat upon the seat in front of the vanity. Time had aged her, as it was prone to do. Wrinkles had begun to set in around her eyes, and around her mouth. Frown lines. With that she couldn’t help but frown for a second before sighing, and attempting to dismiss the look from her own face. Years of that look had left her where she now was. But… Hadn’t that look been well earned? Had she not endured enough for multiple lifetimes? Had her time on this world not been fraught with pain and suffering? Eyes fell away from the image of a woman tired, worn by life reflected in the mirror. Fingers curling in the ends of her long hair, it remained damp from the recent shower, and hollow eyes searched along the cracks in the floor. If the stone below her feet could crack and break but maintain itself for all these years, certainly, she could pull strength from it to do the same. Time would carry on, it always did, it always would. Even if the ghosts only continued to live on in her mind. Sometimes, it felt as though time stood still, sometimes, an instance could rend your entire life, nay, your heart and soul apart before your very eyes. The stupidity of one, called bravery by some, would haunt her for the rest of her life. How long ago had that been? A year? Six years? A decade? In her heart, it may as well have been forever with how it still ached and yearned. Regardless, time had gone on. She was no longer the fresh spring chick, she was no longer pushing greedily through the years, progressing from one class to the next, earning and learning spell after spell until her head hurt from too much text review and field work. The sharp wit and carefully held tongue of her youth no longer would gain her any benefit. While Vivian Xi had once been a mighty figure upon the battlefield, wielding the strongest magicks, taking down countless foes for the name of her guild and for the heart of her beloved…. She was no longer the woman of another time. Eyes finally rose, taking in where she was once more. It was a terribly sharp contrast in comparison to where she would she would be if the question had been asked of her some time before. Oh, how the years had passed. Oh, how she had fallen from nameless heights, and struck every graceless branch upon her way down. Oh, how she… A knock interrupted her thoughts, halted her memories, and the self defeating berating that was sure to soon follow regarding her own shortcomings. How wise she had thought herself when younger. How powerful, how strong, how unstoppable and now…. The knock stirred her again. “Yes, come in.” A sheepish man peeked his head in, clearly there to deliver a message. “Your request has been prepared, Madam Xi.” “Yes. Of course, thank you.” The man gave nod, and pulled his head back through the door, excusing himself as he hurried off. His duties required the utmost care. They would all be in a hurry soon. It was obvious. As much as her heart ached, as much as wanted to crumple and crawl away, this was not the time for such things. Now when such a troubling dawn was soon to be upon them. She would have to be strong until the time came to fight again, she would need to be like the rock upon her floor, cracked but holding, she would need to stand tall and assure that the fate she feared and hoped against would not come to fruition. No one need to fall upon the streets in bloodied cries of agony and distress. They would have to do better this time, better than before, and better than… A look in the mirror was stolen once again, one last time before she would need to move and begin preparations. Oh, how the mighty fell when love gripped them strongly, and never let go. |
