A litany of screams – and the familiar strumming of Ari’s instrument and singing voice, sharp and clear and articulate as ever – were the first signs that he should perhaps just jimmy open the nearest window, somehow abseil down to the ground, and flee the Nobles District as fast as possible. Miles’ involvement had ended the moment he’d been stabbed by an animate doll; it was time to get the fuck out of Dalmasca, as the saying went.
But just as he limped down the hallway and towards the window leading to the blessed outdoors, the sound of music – bard music, battle music – continued to filter towards him. Miles noted the sound of Audrey screaming, rewinding and replaying that noise in his head.
And finally, with a groan that ran deep into his soul, he swiveled on his heel and headed towards the kitchen. When he barged in, he was humming along with Ari’s song, mimicking her very voice and inflection and doubling the efficacy of the spell.
