Commoners and nobles will learn of the murder Tuesday afternoon through news and other information outlets.
Alleyway nearest Rue Delambre; Tenement District. 12:30 AM. The Knights of the Peace were called in for a disturbance. Street lamps flickered ominously down the narrow length of Rue Delambre, a warning perhaps for those few who still wandered the city at such a late hour. Even with the sound of screams, those who populated this run down district knew better than to go sticking their noses in the business of another unwanted. They were very successful in steering clear of the ruckus and, potentially, mucking up an already grisly scene. Nearby witnesses reported only the yelling and the struggle, each deciding it was a mugging or worse and choosing carefully not to involve themselves further. Even the EKP took much longer to congregate in these dank and filthy alleys than they would've, perhaps, if the reports had come from elsewhere. Typical as well, for even they seemed reticent to wander forth at such an hour--and it was all with fair reason. The scene was laid out for the knights in a macabre display. Blood stained the alley in morbid, meticulous design, much of it dried now to a dark and ugly shade of brown. Clearly, whoever this mangled victim had once been, his death had been slow and painful. A poor man by the state of his clothing and appearance, likely homeless as many in this district were, caught simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. A medical examiner summoned on the scene determined the cause of death as exsanguination. The unknown victim had been bound at wrists and feet and cut in various portions of his body, forced to bleed out slowly until dead, the rivers of his blood filling the cracks of the cobblestones beneath. In this blood were symbols drawn about the corpse, an indecipherable script of foreign symbols written by a steady and careful hand. The knights found themselves baffled by the strange markings. Abstract theories were traded amongst them, although few believed them to be something that would offer a deeper meaning. Graffiti then, gore-drawn gibberish, a killer's sick attempts at humor. The longer the knights lingered in the alley, however, the more curious the common citizens became. Word spread, and by morning the crowds had grown enough to start the webs of rumors throughout the city. A homeless beggar found dead in an alley, carved up with a knife and left as meal for the rats. Many nobles would think nothing on the affair, as the poor were often ready to turn on each other in such a violent manner, but those living in the Tenement District would find it difficult to sleep easy. No one had seen anyone else enter or leave the alley that evening, but watch on the streets and the sewer tunnels were doubled for the time being. |
