Fortunately, Boris seemed quite content to let himself be stroked by the stranger., which was a small mercy. He was meant as a guard dog, though he was generally extraordinarily well behaved when Juliette took him out. If he hadn’t been, she would not have been able to, for of course she did not have the strength to wrestle him into submission – and perhaps he realized this, for his instances of acting out in this way were quite rare and mostly limited to Lord Amell and Zelda.
“Not at all,” she was quick to assure. “My apologies… miss,” she finally decided on as the only appropriate title. “When Boris wants something I am afraid I… am not entirely capable of deterring him.” And, she realized, she had introduced the dog, but not herself. Flushing pink, she disentangled her right hand from the leash, offered it. “I am Juliette,” she offered, leaving off the Lady, as she usually did when she thought she could get away with it. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
She thought for a moment that perhaps she ought to try to return the kindness – not many people stood still and calm when a dog Boris’ size seemed intent on making their acquaintance – and, remembering the slightly confused look she had witnessed on the young woman’s face, she ventured, “Might I assist you with… finding something?”
