Ari breathed a sigh of relief when darkness descended, and was finally able to open her eyes all the way. She took the water gratefully, and polished off the contents of the glass in three large, greedy gulps. She coughed, then set the glass aside. At least her throat was lubricated.
"You know," she said, "I wasn't as drunk as you were. So I do remember you leaving the common room, and exactly," well, mostly, "how it looked." And she had a notion she was being lied to, especially because Audrey was clearly pretty miserable and yet continuing to justify herself instead of simply falling onto the unused bed and sleeping the sleep of the dead. "I think I should try to wheedle the truth out of you -- you shouldn't lie to your best friend, you know."
