Nate's day had started a fair bit earlier than he liked. He'd intended to do some asking around, get himself legitimately hired to the wagon crew, but his injuries hadn't really given him time to do that, so he'd be doing this the hard way.
Nobles loved to eat, it seemed. So it wasn't too difficult, with all the chaos of preparation, to slip around back of the delivery wagons and wait 'til no one was watching too closely. Nate knew what folks who did this kind of work wore and walked like - he was from the Docks, after all - and it was easy enough to pick up some drab, patched trousers at the seedier end of the Bazaar. Taking his time, he picked up a stack of fruit crates from the back of a cart and began lugging them into the great kitchens of Reinholdt's Manor.
Inside, it was like some bizarre circle of hell, with the air full of steam and kitchen boys constantly under foot. Perfect. Nate placed the fruit down with the other crates, and took advantage of the chaos to vanish down a corridor. He'd never been in this particular building - who'd dare thieve around at Reinholdt's place, after all - but all nobles were the same. Keep the actual work hidden where they couldn't see it happening. Which meant the laundry should be - aha!
Inside, the washing tubs were empty and the rooms were silent. Looked like the laundry folks had been drafted to prepare for the ball, instead. Now, hopefully - Nate began opening cupboards one by one. He needed some kind of uniform, if he was going to make it into the ball proper. Didn't really matter exactly what.
Finally, after exhausting all of the cupboards framing the room, Nate saw a narrow door tucked behind a drying rack. Inside, he struck gold - it was a wardrobe, full of pressed servant's clothing. Including formal black footman uniforms, with black domino masks poking out of the pockets, clearly sitting ready for the evening. Perfect.
Nate pulled down a suit that seemed roughly his size. He could change into it later. For now, it was time to find somewhere to hide until the serving folks were called in.
