The Blue Bear was a small bar hidden in the Tenements District, relatively inconspicuous if not for its reputation as a shady place where unscrupulous business was oft held. René knew of the bar, but he’d never ventured close enough to get a look inside. Outside the door, he hesitated, fingers curled over the hood around his neck. It was too late to ask someone to come. He’d rather have Kiernan here with him, or maybe even Drake. That idea had been quelled immediately—he didn’t want Cian to think anything was fishy, nor did he want to involve his friends in this—but it crept back and lingered like a regret.
With a sigh, he left his hood down and stepped inside. For a moment, time seemed to slow and tense as everyone turned to look at him, but then he blinked. No one was paying him any mind. Not that he could tell, anyway. He avoided looking at anyone directly and made his way toward the bar, where he asked (after finally getting the man’s attention), “Um, I’m here to meet Cian. He said he has a private room?” The bartender slid a drink down the counter to a patron, then gave René a once over. He didn't make any comment, only gestured to a narrow hallway.
After a quiet mention of his appreciation, René left the counter and walked over to what he hoped was Cian’s private room. A few minutes before nine. He pulled his sleeve back over his watch, and lifted a fist to knock against the door several times. “Cian?” he called out, “it’s me, René Beau.”
