"Having your daddy around is helpful for both of us, Joanna," Ellen remarked quietly. Gently she patted her daughter's knee, a light smile on her face at the thought of her family being here. Yes, they were dead, but they were together again. They were whole. That was what really mattered.
"And don't you worry yourself over everybody else, neither," she added. Granted she wasn't exactly sure what had her daughter struggling, but she didn't have to know the specifics. If Joanna wanted to share, that was her decision. As much as Ellen might not always act like it, she did know the girl was grown. She would always be her little girl, of course, but sometimes... well, sometimes you just had to let them grow up. No matter how hard it was or how much it might hurt.
"Folks are going to do whatever it is they're going to do. You can't change them anymore than you can reach the moon from the ground. All you can do is be there and try to be as understanding as possible." She paused, then tacked on a pointed, "Though not at your own detriment, mind. Don't ever compromise who you are, over nobody else."
