CHARACTERISTICS
Toby was raised under the direction to live life to the fullest, which is something he has never failed to do. He is honestly optimistic to a fault so long as he's surrounded by interesting things and people, which is most of the time since he goes out of his way to be engaged. He isn't, by any means, shy and does more than his share of looking for trouble, since while learning will always be his first love, he also has a love/hate relationship with danger. He believes in getting his hands dirty and can be extremely relentless when his mind is set on something. Yet he's not the type of guy to have ulterior motives, and he is extremely forgiving and will give anyone the benefit of the doubt. He has morals and principles he will stick with and he will never do anyone unnecessary harm. As for his friends, he is fiercely loyal to them, and his cheerful nature will flip in an instant if a friend is threatened. Toby is a dreamer with a mind that goes the speed of light. He can talk quickly and with impressive energy, but his thoughts are always faster and often tripping over themselves, leaving him prone to distraction or forgetfulness. Yet while Toby is excitable, open minded, and adventurous, he also has traits that leave him vulnerable. In being so trusting, he is also gullible while his adventurous and motivated side makes him notorious for leaping-before-looking. As for his desire for danger and risky business, it comes with a lack of self-preservation and that necessary sense of situational awareness. He is in need of a companion willing to reign him in or have his back, so is lucky to have connections through the Hunter Network. Yet even with companions and his trusting nature, Toby is reluctant to rely completely on someone. He is independent, and can come off as being detached, since other people's emotions are a little hard for him to understand, and that combined with his mile-a-minute approach to life has ended many relationships. When it's all said and done, Toby's biggest bane is boredom. He tries to avoid it the best he can, but when it creeps up on him, he turns reckless to get away from it again. Luckily there are plenty of things to keep him occupied, whether it be accompanying Hunters, making new weapons, practicing his magic, or studying new or old supernatural beings alike. Thus although Toby is excitable and energetic, he does possess a necessary level of focus for his too. A lot of the time, it has to be coaxed out of him, or demanded from him, but it is there, and it is within those rare meditative moments that the depth of his cleverness and quick-thinking truly shine. Background Toby was the only child of Hunter Diana Søren and humble coffeeshop owner Niels Clausen. Needless to say, settling down was not in the plans for Diana, so she gave baby Toby to his father and continued hunting actively across Europe and Western Asia. Toby, in the meantime, was raised in Århus, Denmark and enjoyed the normal if not sheltered life that came with it, or as normal as one could be when you found yourself years ahead of your peers in maths. It was a startling trait for an unexpecting father to discover, but it wasn't cause for him to be less protective of his son, even when Toby eventually turned his sharp mind to the sciences and continued to excel. If anything, it made Niels more protective but little did he know it was only the start of it. Toby was a youth who lived for intellectual puzzles and understanding, and with a scientific stance, his curiosity turned him to magic. Curiosity and intelligence often don't mix well. Such delving should have been harmless-- nothing should have come of it, but Toby still tackled it with vigor and came out the other side with the realization that he had a gift. He could harness light energy for photokinesis, though he also promptly burned himself in the process. But pain was not something that could deter Toby's inquiry, and neither could the eventual side-effect of insomnia. He was fascinated, and although he almost gave his father a heartattack from this particular discovery, Niels knew it was now impossible to shelter his son. He encouraged the practice and control of Toby's power and finally told him about his mother and the world she was part of. It was a lot to take in, but Toby digested it all as simple fact and was swiftly smitten with it. Thus similar to how his intrigue led him to magic, it led him to the lore and study of beasts, monsters, and creatures too. It was frustrating though, since Toby was not allowed to up and leave home to investigate such things first hand. Niels even called Diana home to dissuade their son, to keep him in school, and his estranged mother's stories placated Toby until he was distracted by University, which he traveled abroad for. Toby attended MIT in the States, and it was no surprise that he excelled in academia, and he earned a few degrees (i.e. physics, chem, bio) even while studying the supernatural world on the side. He still aimed to be a part of it-- to dive into it with his magic and the useful possibilities of his mind, but Toby went to medical school first, though he did not graduate. There was a sudden buzz among the Scandinavian Hunter Network and he was whisked out of school. A beast had tracked his mother and destroyed their home, killing his parents. Toby wasn't given more details than that, and he was advised against returning to Århus. Adventurous sometimes translates to foolish. Thus it was tragedy that gave him the opening to enter the Hunting world. He did so without second thought, abandoning his old life, since it was only in the Network that he could discover what happened to his parents. He knows revenge is out of the question-- that finding the beast that killed his parents would be near impossible, but he'll damn well be on the lookout. He wants to piece together the events that led up to the attack and their deaths, to gather intel of what happened and make sense of it all. Learning more about who his mother was as a hunter wouldn't be so bad either. He's been on the road a couple of years now, moving State-side, advising about creatures and checking out beast killings-- and he's put a magical aspect into weapon development. He has yet to really learn how to be a hunter (he's a novice at best), but he aids and assists in anyway he can and will never turn down a chance to help. RELATIONSHIPS Ana Ternovec Ana was one of the first hunters Toby met who willingly remained on his contact list, since his weapon creation hobby was definitely a good thing for her to keep close. He takes commissions from her whenever it is needed and is happily on call for the next adventure or occurrence. Toby isn't one to say no, especially to any benefits of their friendship, though Toby is exceptionally fond of her and wouldn't mind a few lessons in badassery, or just plain hunting. Seth Holbrook Toby and Seth met when they both attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Their genius levels with science and technology (respectively) counterbalanced one another and their cheerful attitudes made them fast friends. Their connection in the hunting world was then sealed when they were both kidnapped by a demon. The demon was trying to unlock the power of a magical item so took the two bright minds to figure it out. Their options were either success or death, and since they failed to activate the artifact, they had no choice but to escape. They did so due to the initiation of Toby's power and Seth swiftly took advantage of the opening to kill the demon. Toby still carries the artifact to this day, and together they invent and create new weapons for hunters. Evan Conrad A fellow Eldritch Hunter who Toby met through Seth when he joined their ranks. Evan's only three years his senior, but Toby looks up to him and his experience and is always eager to hear tales of his hunts. He calls him "Master Evan" for fun, but it also speaks volumes of how Toby perceives the laid back and joking hunter: he knows he could learn a lot from him. So just call Toby "Padawan." Character Name Description description description description description description description description description description description description description. Abilities and Skills Upon first glance, Toby does not appear very intelligent. If anything, he can come off as foolish or rather dense, but this is not the case. At a very young age, Toby proved to be extremely good at numbers. Their complexity always came clearly to him and they had a knack for sticking in his memory, and it wasn't long before he pushed his sharp mind beyond mathematics and into the various sciences. Toby dove into physics, chemistry, and biology and proved to be a glutton for (and fountain of) information. He took a special fancy to astrophysics and astronomy after his curious mind was drawn into magic, and his understanding of it aids his Photokinesis. Though his general intrigue and knowledge has also pushed him as a supernatural scientist-- left him curious about beasts and creatures and monsters (he'd be first in line to dissect a new specimen) and wanting to help create new weaponry to fight against them. Yet while he may be sciency-smart and an eager learner, Toby's intelligence stops there. "Street smarts" is not his forte, and he still has things to learn in the Hunting world. Light magic is Toby's specialty. Toby is also one of the "random" occurrences of the Eternal bloodline appearing in the mundane world. It is possibly traceable through his father's family, but the knowledge of it was lost somewhere and Toby's likening to magic (and success with it) was purely incidental. It was initially emotionally-initiated and with that, he he became completely self-taught. He learned a variety of cantrips but has a special affinity with the generation and manipulation of light energy: photokinesis. He draws the light from a natural source, like the sun, stars, or flame, and can use and manipulate its energy immediately or store it into an magic reserve for later use, like when there is no source present. Active storage can simply be done by sun- or star-bathing, though the side effects of its collection is insomnia. It is raw energy that Toby stores, so when he does use photokinesis from his reserves, he exchanges the physical energy back into electromagnetic radiation (which produces visible light). Needless to say, this process is physically taxing. The light he creates has the same properties of stars, so it is not merely a light orb, but luminous plasma with chemical, gravitational, and radiation properties. He can influence the types and levels, but it easily gets out of control if he loses focus, so he has burned himself and has damaged quite a bit of property. Toby can also manipulate the light into coherent beams or create simple, much less dangerous orbs for illumination. Facts and Trivia
