Crouched behind a desk outside the office of the DMLE, Marietta's eyes went wide as she took in the scene of chaos around her. How had this happened?? she thought, furious with the turn of events. She was finally able to prove herself as useful and now she would only be looked at with suspicion. How could they have known? Surely the Death Eaters would not suspect her having passed information? She was sure they wouldn't have known, and besides, the floo entrance was undisturbed. She had seen nicely to that. Now here she was, torn between a desire to publicly join her brethren and fight and to try and flee to avoid capture and ruining her Ministry cover.
She saw an opening in the fray; if she stayed behind her cloak and threw some disarming spells around her as she ran, she wouldn't draw too much attention to herself. She had to get out. If they captured her, she was as good as dead. She might as well kill herself, it would be far better than whatever her fellow Death Eaters would put her through if she were forced to give information. No, she had to get out, and get out now. She peeked over the desk she was crouched behind, looking for the secretary's desk and her floo to freedom. Bracing herself, she clung to her wand, pulled her mask far over her face, and ran. "Expelliarmus!" she shouted, aiming her wand at no one in particular as she tried to make her way across the department floor. She felt the white hot sting of a hex ripping by her arm. Pain filled her with a sudden sense of purpose and calm, as she made her way to the secret exit and freedom.
Please don't let them catch me! was her only thought.
