Draco felt his jaw clench and his muscles tighten at hearing Theodore’s admissions. For as long as he could remember, Theodore was one to remain on the neutral edge of the cause and oftentimes Draco felt quite extremist in comparison. It seemed the tables had now been turned and Draco took a sip of his drink before responding to his long time friend.
It should be noted that Draco was taken aback at the level of and outward honesty displayed as in the corners of his mind he had expected Theodore to dance around the outskirts of honesty rather than rip wide open the seams and expose the actual nature of things. Such a thought in Draco’s mind is partly the cause of his tension while on the other hand, the fact that Theodore’s next statement indicated that now, others knew of his delving back into the Death Eaters and working to win the favour of the Lestranges. This was by far the most troubling for him. If for no other reason than it meant his cover was now just that much harder to conceal.
“I can understand your want to act upon your beliefs.” Draco nodded firmly in agreement, his vocal tones even and cool. “I’ve most certainly felt the same.” He added keeping his eyes focused on his friend. “In fact, since we’re putting it all out on the table,” Draco drawled slowly, “You are correct; I’ve had some contact with my Uncle and his brother and I’ve made it clear that I am no longer the same boy who was once unable to complete a order.” Draco’s words curled around his lips with almost a look of distaste as if the words themselves were tainted.
Switching gears after a moment of lingering on the flashed memories of his own failures in the years past, Draco let a smile tug upwards and raised his glass slightly as if to acknowledge something.
“Here’s to stepping out of neutrality and into a future of Purity.” Draco’s words seemed lighter now, though his mind weighed heavier than even he knew.
