It was only supposed to be lunch; that was all Hermione had expected. But her parents had surprised her (and Ron) in the afternoon with her aunt and uncle having flown in from France. Her family was small, but scattered across the globe, and it meant that they rarely spent any kind of time together. With that in mind, she knew she was expected to stay on for dinner, though it meant missing accompanying Ron to Shell Cottage. By the time he left without her, Hermione had apologised at least five times.
After staying for dinner, she had managed to excuse herself before it got too late. Arriving home before Ron, she set about writing notes and sending out all of her Christmas gifts. Running late for lunch, she hadn't even had a chance to give Ron his yet, and so it was waiting for him on the coffee table for when he returned.
Curled up on the couch with one of the books that her parents had given her, she was alternating between reading and wondering how he was getting on without her. She had only been home for an hour or so without him when Ron apparated in.
He disappeared into the bedroom before she could say anything, returning with a gift that Hermione was quite honestly not expecting. "Merry Christmas, Ron," she responded. "You didn't have to do that." She was fairly sure that he'd had more important things on his mind. Leaning across to pick up her gift for him, Hermione handed it over.
