Eric was wandering in the halls, looking for something to do or maybe someone to talk to. He wasn't in the mood for watching tv in the rec room like usual, and he didn't know anyone here. The people he did know either left or disappeared. So he didn't really have anyone to talk to either, but he could always meet someone new, just as long they weren't some psycho killer or something.
As he walked along, he got a little hungry and stopped by the rec room where there was a vending machine. He walked up and put some coins in the machine, then waited for a chocolate bar to fall out. It reminded him of the time he met Hyde here and the incident with the vending machine, which got him ten extra chocolate bars. After getting the chocolate bar, he headed back out into the hallway and nearly bumped into someone.
