Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario and architect of the Wii and DS gaming revolution, cuts a relaxed figure as he takes to the stage at E3 with his American translator. The veteran game maker skipped Nintendo's big E3 press conference this year, and he tells us that he is in a relaxed mood as a result, having sat in the audience during the main conference.

Braid Creator Hints At New Game
 e3 - (sevastra)

10:58pm 18/07/2009

Jonathan Blow, the creator of art-platformer Braid for the 360 and PC recently posted a job listing on his site for looking for 3D Environment Concept Artist to work on his next game.

In an interview with yours truly, Blow said he's working on a 3D game that's "twice the budget of Braid." The job posting describes the new project thusly: "a puzzle-exploration game that is philosophical, and quiet, and is being made for reasons other than crass profit motive.”

The help-wanted ad specifically states that applications not have a portfolio containing "Girls With Big Tits; Barbarians Wielding Axes, Covered in Blood; Aliens; Space Ships; Gangsters Getting Shot in the Face; Orcs; Giant Robots; and, of course, Postapocalyptic Wastelands."

I can totally get behind these criteria... but man, seeing the tropes of the mainstream game industry all laid out in a neat little list sure makes them seem ridiculous, right?

MotionPlus Compulsory for Next Zelda
 e3 - (ex_spellboun8)

"Miyamoto says peripheral required for Link's next adventure."

MotionPlus will be an integral part of the next Zelda game, with comments from Shigeru Miyamoto suggesting that the peripheral will be compulsory for Link's next adventure on the Wii.

'The goal at this point is that we would make Wii MotionPlus required in order to play Zelda', Miyamoto told Wired. 'The bigger hurdle for us is not really whether people have a Wii MotionPlus or don't have it, it's whether or not the experience is one where people will think they want to have a Wii Motion Plus in order to experience it.'

Released this Friday, MotionPlus augment's the Wii's existing remote and introduces near 1:1 control.

The new Zelda game was absent from Nintendo's press conference at this year's E3, with the only details coming in the form of a piece of concept art shown to journalists by Miyamoto.

The Sims 3 Sells 1.4 Million in First Week
 e3 - (sevastra)

When the Sims 3 went on sale in the midst of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, some worried it might be overshadowed by the event. They shouldn't have. Buoyed by sterling critical praise, the game has sold over 1.4 million copies in its first week on the market, Electronic Arts announced today.

The Sims 3's milestone further fills the coffers of the Sims franchise, which has generated well over $4 billion since its launch in 2000. And while the Sims, the Sims 2, and their myriad expansions have sold over 100 million copies, the Sims 3 may outshine its predecessors, if its first-week sales are any prognosticator. EA reports that the game is the fastest selling PC title in its history, auguring that it and its inevitable expansions will be fixtures on bestseller lists for years to come.

As outlined in GameSpot's review, the Sims 3 includes several new features. Players can customize their characters' personalities, choosing among traits, such as brave, artistic, absent-minded, and kleptomaniac. Furniture and clothing can be customized based on color and pattern. The game also sports a new dynamic, real-time neighborhood system where households are seamlessly integrated.

Ironically, EA is celebrating the Sims 3's sales without the mastermind of the Sims franchise, Will Wright. In April, he left EA Games to establish an "entertainment think tank" called Stupid Fun Club.

RPGs Heading to Wii and Ds
 e3 - (sevastra)

While it isn’t necessarily the kind of earth-shaking news you'd expect/want from an E3 press conference, it’s certainly good to know that Nintendo plans to bring several new RPGs to Wii and DS by the end of the year and beyond.

For the DS, players can expect Kingdom Hearts (Sept. 29), Mario and Luigi RPG 3: Bowser’s Inside Story (Fall 2009), and Golden Sun (2010). Square Enix’s Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers, which has been out for a couple years in Japan, will be hitting the Wii sometime by the end of 2009.

Many of these titles will be available on display on the show floor, so stay tuned for hands-on impressions over the next few days.

New WarioWare
 e3 - (sevastra)

08:02pm 02/06/2009

At the company's E3 press event today, Nintendo revealed a new WarioWare game. WarioWare DIY is a touch screen and camera mini-game collection for the DS.

The game's big innovation: WarioWare DIY allows players to create their own mini-games for the system, and then share them using the DSi's online capabilities. WarioWare DIY allows customized characters, environments, actions and goals to be added to mini-games.

I'm terrified of the games you will create.. but, if you have any fantastic ideas, leave them in our comment section below.

Sony Motion Sensor
 e3 - (sevastra)

In order to provide gamers with a "gaming experience closer to real life than anything we've seen," Sony has unveiled a motion-sensing control system for the PlayStation 3. The thing combines the PlayStation EyeToy camera with a controller and allows one-to-one tracking as well as allowing scanning of objects in a game. Seems to me like a cross between Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus and Microsoft's webcam motion controller.

Sony showed off a number of tech demos, including a sword-fighting game, tennis, a painting game, archery, a real-time strategy title and a first-person shooter. The system will be available in Spring 2010.

Wait, I thought the PS3 already had motion-sensing controllers...

Final Fantasy XIV Online
 e3 - (sevastra)

07:55pm 02/06/2009

Sony dropped a bit of a bomb at its E3 press conference by revealing Final Fantasy XIV Online. Perhaps even bigger for Sony fans is that the game will be a Sony exclusive, and will be released in 2010. Given that FF XIII is expected early next year, this announcement is easily one of the most surprising of E3 so far. Well done, Sony.

Update: Well...maybe not totally exclusive. According to Square Enix's press release, Final Fantasy XIV Online will also be available on PC. So it's a Sony console exclusive, anyway. Check out the game's official site. There's not a whole lot of information there, but there is confirmation that the "Online" designation at the end of the title indeed suggests an MMO. That's right, folks, another Final Fantasy MMO will be yours to behold in 2010.
