Coming back from the dead had either A; become a new fad or B; become an epidemic. As Lilah reviewed a file that sat before her on the desk, one manicured fingernail absently tapped the desk itself. She couldn't show any emotion-that would never do, to reveal a weakness to the cameras and bugs she knew were present in her office. This was Wolfram and Hart, after all. Despite the evil that the firm itself did on behalf of the Senior Partners, most of the people here were still focused on their individual petty rivalries.
The same sort of petty rivalry that had promoted her all those years ago. And for her sake, the Senior Partners didn't revoke her job title when they resurrected her. They'd just moved her office.
Her thoughts drifted back to the words on the pages before her, and she shifted absently in her seat. Why hadn't Wes mentioned that Chase was back? And that he'd spoken to her? Lilah thought that she and Wes were at the point where they didn't keep secrets anymore-although she couldn't really say that, because here she was reviewing the latest from her recon team. They were the ones who had reported Cordelia's return from the great up and beyond. Wes wouldn't be happy to know she had him being followed, and watched...though she explained it to herself by saying it wasn't for the firm. It was for her. She wanted to be sure he was okay. Especially when he did stupid things like confronting Angelus. Lilah was still upset at Wes for that one. Inwardly, the very thought of Angelus made her want to cringe in memory of a few years ago.
Though she was intrigued by Buffy's manner of retrieving Angel's soul. Of course she'd discovered the deal-it had been child's play because all demonic deals were retrievable via WH's extensive network. She imagined that she could probably go down to a basement and find it on paper herself, the same way the man she loved had once sought her own perpetuity contract.
Love. The thought stopped her. But it was there. She did truly love Wesley-though whether that was good for either of them, she couldn't say. She knew he felt the same way about her. But she had serious doubts that either would admit to saying so out loud. There was too much in the way-pride not withstanding.
Still it hurt, inwardly, that he hadn't told her that Cordelia was alive. A woman that Lilah knew meant a lot to him . . . and yet he hadn't shared that part of his life with her. Not even all those years ago, when they'd been in each other's beds by night and at each other's throats by day.
